A well defined jaw is the cornerstone of a seductive and balanced face, whether for a woman or a man. Chin surgery, also known as genioplasty, is done by placing a custom chin implant. The cosmetic surgeon can add volume to a weak chin or recessed, improving the harmony of the face.
It is not uncommon for a chin surgery to be done in combination with other facial surgery operations (such as rhinoplasty) to give a better overall balance to the face especially for the profile.
Am I a good candidate?
You are a good candidate for genioplasty if:
- The bones of your face have reached the maturity of their physical growth, which usually occurs in late adolescence.
- You are bothered by a small recessed chin or a jaw that is too thin and does not emphasize the contour of the face enough.
- You are in good health and do not have a serious medical history.

How does the genioplasty procedure work ?
Chin surgery types :
In a sliding genioplasty, a surgeon uses a saw to cut the chin bone from the rest of the jaw and advance its position to correct chin removal. This is also called a bone genioplasty.
This type of genioplasty is recommended for people with severe retinopathy, or those whose chin is too far back from the rest of their face. It can also help correct chin that is too advanced or too long.
Chin implants can be used to reshape, enlarge or change the appearance of the chin. This can be accomplished by surgery or fat injection.
Surgical chin augmentation involves putting an implant in the chin and adhering it to the bone. Alloplastic implants (those made from synthetic materials) are the most common.
The non-surgical increase of the chin involves the use of needles to inject materials such as body fat (lipofilling) to improve the appearance of the chin.
After the operation
You may feel numbness in your chin for up to 3 months, and a sensation of stretching around the chin for 1 week. The swelling disappears in 6 weeks, depending on the type of procedure.
It will be necessary to follow a diet based on liquids for at least a day or two.
Dressings will be removed within one week of surgery. You may be asked to wear a splint while sleeping for a period of 4 to 6 weeks.
You can resume a light activity on the day of the surgery. You will be able to return to work and your usual activities within 7 to 10 days.
